Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, 11 July 2018: Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DOH), the regulator of the healthcare sector in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, welcomed a delegation of international experts and local healthcare representatives in a three-day initiative as part of the ‘Abu Dhabi Healthcare Efficiency’ programme. The programme aims to work with key industry players to appraise clinical outcomes from across the Abu Dhabi healthcare system, reviewing existing medical services and challenges and identifying opportunities to elevate healthcare efficiency and quality through steps to improve clinical outcomes and cost-efficient planning.
The delegation to DoH was led by Professor Tim Briggs Chair of GIRFT and National Health Service (NHS) Improvement’s National Director of Clinical Quality and Efficiency, one of the most renowned in his field.
The ‘Getting It Right First Time’ (GIRFT) programme is a British initiative designed to streamline and improve care in the National Health Service (NHS). It aims to enhance the efficiency of care across NHS hospitals in the United Kingdom by limiting unwarranted clinical variations using a standardised process.
H.E. Mohamed Hamad Al Hameli, Undersecretary of DoH said: “Strategically aligned with Abu Dhabi’s 2030 vision and DoH’s long-term strategy to further enhance healthcare efficiency, DoH continues to make strides in delivering better quality care through improved clinical outcomes and patient safety, as well as encouraging research and innovation to maintain a sustainable healthcare sector and improving cost efficiencies through better resource allocation.”
Al Hameli added: “With close collaboration with GIRFT, the Abu Dhabi Healthcare Efficiency programme will be able to identify areas of improvement in the healthcare system by exploring innovative solutions for enhancing patient experience whilst ensuring the provision of optimal and cost-effective clinical services.”
Dr. Asma Al Mannaei, Director, Healthcare Quality Division said: “Our collaboration with GIRFT is an evolutionary addition to Abu Dhabi quality index programme – JAWDA and will contribute to its continuous efforts of taking the quality of healthcare services to higher levels of international care by ensuring patient safety and highly effective services that maintain patient trust. This first-of-its-kind collaboration with GRIFT outside the UK aims to leverage international expertise and promote innovation and knowledge-sharing while maintaining outreach with public and private healthcare providers to improve overall healthcare quality.”
Professor Tim Briggs of GIRFT said that the current available data on quality and clinical outcomes of Abu Dhabi’s healthcare sector clearly reflect a solid foundation and strong capabilities that are the keystone for realising its full potential ambition and long-term plan to become a world-class healthcare sector. He further emphasised the sector’s eagerness to embark on the next steps of development which will improve treatment outcomes and efficiency.
Professor Briggs was appointed as National Director for Clinical Quality and Efficiency for the NHS in 2015 and has led and rolled out his GIRFT methodology across all surgical and medical specialties within the provider network.
DoH held a series of workshops, brainstorm sessions and field trips to local private and public sectors as part of the programme initiatives in the presence of senior representatives from DoH, Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA), Mubadala Healthcare and leading healthcare services providers from the private sector.
